Beer:30 – Week 1
Tasting One for the Team
Welcome to the first of many Bensur Beer Thirty Tasting Competitions. On a regular basis, a wanna be group of beer connoisseurs, (if Genny Cream Ale and Pabst Blue Ribbon count) will taste and judge several of the best brews available in Erie, PA. The judging panel consisted of five tasters, Cyndi is on the wagon because of her Lenten obligation so she could not participate.
The theme of our first tasting was Belgian beers. Not Belgian-style like Blue Moon and Shock Top, but the real stuff, made by Benedictine monks with very high alcohol contents. For all of you neophytes, Belgian Beers have a range of flavors and aromas, like wine, and can be surprisingly complex and mysterious.
This week’s Belgian beers for the tasting were given to us by Brian Scott, President of the Flagship Niagara League. Brian’s theory was if he bribed us with beer, he may be able to get the team to work harder and faster. (Note: We encourage other Bensur clients to test his theory.)
Of the six Belgian beers tested the clear winner was Corsendonk Christmas Ale. This complex, full bodied ale received an average score of 6.8 on a scale of 10. Congratulations to folks who brew Corsendonk. I am sure they are honored. Stay tuned for our next Beer Thirty Tasting…Pennsylvania Beers!
