The recently “Most Read” and “Most E-mailed” article on AdAge.com includes no one other than Lady Gaga. Considered to be the “modern day Madonna”, Lady Gaga achieved “Madonna” status in a mere 18 months as compared to Madonna’s 10 years or so rise to fame. How was this possible? With a little help from social media, of course! Currently, the pop star has over 5 million Facebook fans and over 2 million followers on Twitter. More than many artists I know, that is for sure.

Over the past months, Lady Gaga has been able to dominate music charts and is considered to be the savior of the music industry by selling over 20 million albums in a society where non-digital CD’s are rarely purchased anymore.

Furthermore, Lady Gaga, along with Cyndi Lauper, is the face of the new MAC Cosmetics MAC Viva Glam campaign promoting a limited edition lipstick she created. Released not too long ago, upon checking the website, Lady Gaga’s lipstick is already sold out (Cyndi Lauper’s is still available!). Also, with this overall campaign, MAC Cosmetics has outsold any other launch over their 16-year existence. All this due to Lady Gaga and her rise to fame through the social media networks (her innovative, crazy outfits may have also helped). Otherwise, I find this all to be rather impressive. So, therefore, don’t ever underestimate the power of social media.
