The 100 Best Companies to work for in 2010

WORK. Some people find it to be one of the most self fulfilling things they do while others may consider it a four letter word. Most people need to work to sustain a desired standard of living. The key to happiness in the workplace is performing a job you love. The bonus is working for a company that values you as an employee. So if you have to work for a living, as most people do, why not work for one of the 100 Best Companies as listed by Fortune Magazine in the February 8, 2010 issue.

Ranked #1 is SAS and for good reason. The world’s largest privately owned software company has made the list for all 13 years. The amazing list of benefits include unlimited sick days, a medical center staffed with professionals at no cost to the employees, 90% coverage of heath insurance premium, and free high quality child care. But most important is the attitude in which its co-founder, Jim Goodnight, shares with his employees. Trust is greatly valued between the employees and the company.

Another company that continues to make the list is based in our own backyard, Rochester, NY. Ranked #3, Wegmans, one of the best grocers in the nation, was also voted as one of the best places to work. Wegmans has NEVER experienced a layoff in its 94 year history. Job security is high on the list for this company.

Coming in at #4, Google, is still king. If you are willing to move, there may be a job in your future with this computer search engine giant. Google plans to increase their payroll by thousands of employees over the next year. They are based in Mountain View, CA. The weather is wonderful and “Mountain View” sounds like a beautiful place to live.

#34, Chesapeake Energy, the largest natural gas producer, may not be that well known, but certainly wins accolades for being a top employer. This company offers a rich array of benefits including a 15% match for employee 401K plans, medical and dental care, and regular stock grants. Not only does this company have generous benefits in the financial arena for their employees, they take a caring individual approach toward all who work there. CEO, Aubrey McClendon, personally calls each employee on their birthday and all employees have their name listed in the annual report.

If you have ever paid attention to television advertising, you have heard of The Scooter Store, ranked #38. This company has experienced an outstanding job growth of 51% over the past year. Celebrations are common for this health care equipment supplier, from birthday parties to quarterly pep rallies. My guess is, this company has the potential for strong continuous growth as baby boomers continue to move into their golden years.

Here it is, just a few of the best places to work.

So until next time, keep reaching higher…
