Who Has Time For Coupons?

While venturing out to the grocery store this weekend, I happened to pass two women shopping together. In their hands was a coupon filing system with hundreds and I mean hundreds of coupons in it. I thought to myself, “who has time to check and see if they have a coupon for a particular item being purchased”? Lord knows - I don’t have that kind of time…and I went on my way!

While turning down isle 13, I noticed the same two women again, fingering through their coupons and cross checking it with their merchandise. Again in isle 3 I saw them, only this time, their cart was filled to the rim.

I proceeded to pick up the last remaining items on my list and got in line at the checkout and what do you know, there they were, standing in front of me in line. Now, I am not the nosy type but this time, I paid attention to the items in their cart and the increasing dollar amount they were spending.

When everything was said and done, their total bill was $342.76. I thought to myself….holy buckets!!! Then they handed the cashier coupons….oh the poor cashier when she saw the pile of coupons! After the cashier finished redeeming all of their coupons and after what I thought was an eternity, their bill was now $238.26. My heart skipped a beat….they saved almost $105.00!!! Even crazier, my bill was $222.38 and I had half the amount of merchandise!

The use of coupons is increasing at astronomical rates! Shoppers saved nearly $3.5 billion with coupons in 2009, according to the Year-end 2009 Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) Coupon Industry Facts Report. That’s a 30% increase over 2008! From a redemption perspective, that’s nearly 3.2 billion coupons redeemed in 2009, a 23% increase over the prior year. This growth represented the second-highest increase ever recorded for year-over-year coupon redemption.

So who has time for coupons? For me personally, I will make the time if it means saving!
